Why are there no gas stations on the south side of Broadway in Quincy?

Four convenience stations are on the north side of Broadway — the Sixth Street Mini Mart is at 537 Broadway, the Ayerco Convenience Center is at 1801 Broadway, the Jiffi Stop Convenience Store at 2731 Broadway and the Murphy USA gas station at 5217 Broadway.

Chuck Bevelheimer, director of planning, said there’s no reason for the lack of gas stations on the south side of Broadway.

“This is an anomaly,” he said. “Zoning along Broadway is a mix of commercial and residential, depending on location.”

Bevelheimer said the two commercial zoning districts along Broadway are C1B and C2. C1B zoning allows light commercial, such as retail, service and office uses. C2 zoning allows general commercial/auto uses such as convenience stores, auto repair businesses and alcohol uses such as bars.

If you’re counting the Murphy (Walmart) as a separate gas station on Broadway when it’s set that far back, I’d argue that the HyVee gas station falls into the category, as well. That’s on the south side of Broadway, though easier access is from 36th street. The Murphy isn’t exactly curbside on Broadway, either.

Well, there used to be one on south corner of 36th and broadway next to pizza hut when the only other one was 18th and broadway, so its just that the last 3 to go up were 6th, 28th, and walmart area that make it seem so lopsided ironically.
