Dance Studio Portrait
Here’s an example of using available on location props to make a nice environmental portrait. Using the piano as a platform next to a wall mirror added a nice element and depth to the picture.

That’s Cold!
This photo came about while looking for a weather related feature photo. Luckily I found these two friends as they were playing in the snow on their way home from school. I used a long (telephoto) lens to throw the background out of focus as much as possible, placing emphasis on the subjects of the picture. I also used a fast shutter speed in order to help freeze the action. The photographers at the Herald-Whig welcome photography tips from viewers and are happy to answer any questions you may ask of us.

Area Wrestling

Camp Point Central’s Eli Hibbert screams in pain when Brady Kolb from Porta bends Hibbert’s arm behind his back trying to get his back to the mat for a pin. Action was stopped to have Hibbert’s shoulder examined and resumed with a loss for Hibbert. (H-W Photo/Michael Kipley)
Area Wrestling

Devon Johnson from Pittsfield throws Tyler Hampton of Pleasant Valley, Ia., to the mat and pins him in 33 seconds in the 171 lb. weight class. An interesting note to this photo, I was getting the names of the wrestlers from the officials at the beginning of the match and turned around to see Johnson slam Hampton to the mat when I took this photo. With the match over in 33 seconds, this is the only photo of the match. (H-W Photo/Michael Kipley)

Ice, Ice, Baby!
With no basketball games to cover tonight, I headed out to photograph geese and other waterfowl after a tip from local bird-watching enthusiast Ken Heinze pointed to a potential photo opportunity on Quincy Bay. Flowing with the ice theme, I received another tip about a group of friends who play hockey on an icy pond at the Niemann Horse Farm. Ice is nice, but warm weather is better. That’s my take on it.

One for Fun
After shooting a nice family portrait for an upcoming story about the efforts of the Petty family remodeling and opening up a new hotel in Pittsfield, the kids, J.J. and Finley asked if they could make funny faces for another picture. This sort of fun reminds me of the joy of being a photojournalist, and how cool it is to be a kid.
