The Herald-Whig contacted hundreds of area residents, asking them to tell us about heroic, remarkable and inspirational people living among us. This slideshow is based on 34 stories about local people who have worked tirelessly to better the communities in which we live. Some have overcome great obstacles or personal tragedies.
Others witnessed wrongs and have tried to make them right. Still others have volunteered their time for causes they believe to be important. And some have made the most of life’s opportunities. A hero is defined as the central person involved in any remarkable action or event. As you view this collection of portraits of people from all walks of life, and read their stories, we think you will agree there truly are Heroes Among Us.

Snake Inspection

glenn-swick-with-snake

Glenn Swick, a Realtor for Century 21 Broughton Team, recently proved he’ll
do anything to help facilitate the sale of a home. Bruce Hutton with
Midstate Inspection Services was doing a recent home inspection when he
found a four-foot black snake in the attic of the home. “I jumped, banged my
head on one of the rafters and got out of there,” Hutton recalled with a
laugh. “I’m not an exterminator. I’ve done about 1,000 home inspections, and
that’s the first time that’s happened to me.” Hutton called Swick, who went
into the attic wearing shirt and tie and retrieved not one but two snakes,
then turned them loose in the woods near the home. Hutton thought the snakes
climbed up a tree, onto the roof and into the attic. “I’ll go the distance,”
Swick said. “Whatever it takes to make a customer happy. It’s not beyond my
job description.”
