Pizza History

birthday-and-pops-pizza-063a

The Quincy Junior High School seventh and eighth grade softball team
recently visited Pop’s Pizza in Quincy after winning a regional game against
Springfield Lincoln. The pizza party turned out to be as memorable — or
possibly more memorable — than the game. Pop’s challenges any two men to eat
a 32-inch, 15-pound pizza in one hour. If they finish the pizza, they don’t
have to pay for it and they get a pizza of their choice once a month for a
year. Assistant coach Eric Hoke and Randy Wheeler, a step-father to one of
the players on the team, became the first ones to finish the pizza. “We’ve
had 35 or 40 people try, but no one’s even come close before,” owner Scott
Frese said. Wheeler struggled to finish his half of the pizza, but Hoke
stepped in to help as the girls cheered the men on. The Comets’ season ended
on Saturday with an 11-1 loss against Pleasant Plains.  Photo submitted by Kevin Cain
