“Eavesdropping”

With notepad and pen in hand, Lydia Hursh, 11, of Middletown, P.a., takes a moment to sample carmel corn, while “eavesdropping” for authentic dialogue inside Paddlewheel Popcorn and Candy Company in Hannibal, Wednesday, June 30, 2010.  She is part of a group of 12 middle school kids from across the country participating in the Mark Twain Young Authors workshop.  They will spend a week walking in Mark Twain’s footsteps and drawing on their experiences in Hannibal for various writing exercises.

The boys said while the bike is fun, it probably won’t set any speed records. “It’s only got one gear,” McNutt said between gasps of breath. “Slow.”

Special Train Ride

BNSF

From a BNSF Railway Company Special train window, departing West Quincy, Barbara Fuqua, of Hannibal, points out deer in a field to her grandson Ian Failor, 3, as her granddaughter Kloie Failor, 6, and daughter Lisa Fugua look on.  The family, including Barbara Fuqua’s husband Steve Fuqua, who has worked for BNSF for 37 years, joined other employees of BNSF and their families for a 2 hour train ride Thursday, June 17, 2010.  The train is part of a 6,000 mile tour through 13 cities in six states.  The BNSF Special is providing the rides to employees and their family members as a show of appreciation, and to raise money for Boys and Girls Clubs in selected cities along the route.

Matt Aufenkamp, a worker for Concrete Cutting and Coring, drills holes for auger anchors in the wall on the west side of Quincy Junior High School Tuesday afternoon. Aufenkamp is drilling approximately 80 holes the length of the wall, where the auger anchors will be inserted to steady the wall. Aufenkamp said the holes he is drilling range from 12″ to 28″ deep.
