The Daily DOB — Sept. 24

It’s looking more and more likely that the Cubs are going to have one shot to make it a memorable October. After Wednesday’s loss to the Brewers and the Cardinals’ win over the Reds, the Cubs fell seven games behind the Cardinals. The Cubs’ chances of winning the National League Central are slim, considering each team has just 10 games left in the season.

If the season ended today, the Cubs would go to Pittsburgh for the wild card game. The winner of that game will get the Cardinals in a best-of-five opening round playoff series. I’m hoping the Cubs win that game so that we here in the Midwest can experience what East Coast fans have lived before, an intense rivalry heightened with the do-or-die that the playoffs brings. The Red Sox and Yankees have met countless times in the playoffs, including the ALCS.

It’s one thing for the Cubs and Cardinals to play 19 times during the regular season. It’s another thing entirely for them to meet in the playoffs, something that has never happened.

Anyone who participates in social media knows just how bad Cubs and Cards fans are to each other during regular season games. Those Twitter and Facebook muscles will be flexed big time if the two meet in the playoffs.

I hope we get to see it.
