The Daily DOB — Sept. 4

Before I get into today’s topic, I’d like to wish my wife a happy 21st anniversary. Our marriage is legally old enough to drink today. I would also like to thank my parents for paying my wife off to stay with me through the years.

Had a chance to hit the road last night and take in some college football. It’s not often that my alma mater, Eastern Illinois, makes its way to Western Illinois. That’s really a shame because the schools really should play every year. Don’t know why I think that because the Leathernecks — once again — put a hammer to my boys from Coles County. WIU took advantage of five EIU penalties and around 148 stupid penalties, 147 of which were for unsportsmanlike conduct, and rolled to a 33-5 victory.

The last time EIU came to Hanson Field was back in 2002 for a playoff game. Current Dallas QB Tony Romo spent most of the day looking into the sky as the Necks won 48-9. Romo wasn’t even the most impressive future NFL player on the field that day. That honor went to WIU punter Mike Scifres, who has made a nice living as a punter in San Diego.

EIU was pretty awful. The team was undisciplined, which says a lot about the coaching staff. The QB, a transfer from Kentucky, struggled mightily. The Panthers also had no running game. It’s going to be a long fall at O’Brien Stadium.

I don’t think WIU is much better. The defense wasn’t too bad. QND’s Eddy Holtschlag had a great day. The defense will have to carry WIU. I thought WIU’s offense was a bit suspect. The Leathernecks need to find a rushing attack if they want to do anything in the always-tough Missouri Valley Football Conference.

It was a great night for football though. Good crowd that seemed pretty well-behaved. The school does a nice job with its tailgate area, too. You can find a lot worse places to spend a Saturday afternoon than WIU.

We’re off around here until Tuesday. Enjoy all the football this weekend.
