Power Of The Press

For an example of how a newspaper and media banded together after a brutal murder in California, click here.

Gloom and doom in the media world prevails these days … nice to be reminded about the power and responsibility of the press.

Beck is one of the good guys

I’ll miss John Beck, who is retiring in early March as Postmaster in Quincy.

John always called back when you had a post office question. He was always polite no matter how swamped he was at the office. He always had good information and his honesty and ability to communicate with people served him well in a long and distinguished career with the U.S. Postal Service.

Good luck, John. You’ll be missed.

Converting to digital

Posted by – February 17, 2009

There’s been a lot of confusion about TV stations converting from analog to digital.

If you have cable or the Dish Network in Quincy, you should be fine. Otherwise, you need to make sure your television is either digital ready, or you need a converter box.

WGEM-TV has excellent information here about the conversion.

The Toughest Job

Mourners grieve next to a hearse after the funeral for Patricia Yarbrough Piersee and her 5-month-old son, Landon, Sunday afternoon at the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton, Mo. (H-W Photo/Philip Carlson)

Being a pastor might be the loneliest and toughest job of all.

On Sunday in Canton, Mo., Rev. Bob Lane conducted the funeral service of LaGrange residents Tish Yarbrough Piersee and her infant son, Landon, allegedly murdered by husband and father, Christopher Piersee.

What do you say? What do you possibly say to family and friends who are grieving, angry and confused?

Rev. Lane did a good job. They say a preacher takes advantage of weddings and funerals because they have an audience, and you can't blame them. Lane talked about accepting God, about not being angry with God, about what Tish would want.

I cannot speak for the family. How can we say we know how they feel? Few among us can relate, and we'd better be grateful.

I hope Tish's family was comforted, and will be comforted, because this is just the first step in a long and difficult journey.

Musing about the game, the Boss and Broadway stoplights

Bruce Springsteen's fans are definitely loyal, but it's still a mystery to me.

Morning blog musings ….

• Anytime you mention Fletch and Jan Hummel in the same column, life is good.

• Sunday’s Super Bowl wasn’t the best ever played. It was a lousy game until the fourth quarter. One of the most exciting? Yes. Best played? No way. The Cardinals seemed intent on committing silly penalties to torpedo their chances, and the Steelers were in an inexplicable prevent defense when Larry Fitzgerald bolted for the go-ahead touchdown. Fortunately for the second year in a year, an exciting finish made the game enjoyable to watch.

• Some have said they don’t understand the whole Bruce Springsteen thing. Bruce has the most loyal music fans in the world, and yes, it’s a mystery. I like Bruce and all, but I’m not swooning every time he plays. But if you stuck Patty Smyth up there ….

• One more snap of cold weather today before we get into the 50s later this week. Wonder how the ice hockey Pond of Doom is doing ….

• A stoplight at Fifth and Broadway? Sorry, but this will have an affect on Broadway traffic. The last thing we need is to become like Keokuk, Iowa and have one light after the other on the main road through town.
