America wanted to like her and believe in her music. I really subscribe to that theory, but that intangible — not to mention magical — “it” factor was never a part of her repertoire.
And while America obviously liked Hollie Cavanagh, what led to her elimination Thursday night in the Season 11 quarterfinals of American Idol was that very few of us ever bought into her sincerity. She was technician, and a fine one, but she was almost plastic in her on-stage presence. And at this stage of the competition that, my friends, is a death knell.
So we bid bon voyage to Hollie, and thank her for a great ride. But third place was about the best she could have hoped for in a competition as deep as this year’s.
ODDS OF WINNING
It was quite strange the reaction I received to Wednesday night’s blog about the possibility of Phillip Phillips winning the title. Just about everyone I ran into agreed. The consensus seems to be Joshua is most deserving, but the female vote will push Joshua to the front. Like I said on Wednesday, at this stage it’s a pure popularity contest and Phillip has those down-home, country good looks. And don’t think those are not important.
The bottom line, however, is don’t feel too badly for any of the final three. They will all get recording contracts. Even Phillip.
Phillip Phillips: 2-1. I believe in the conspiracy theory. I believe. I believe.
Joshua Ledet: 3-1. He should win, but …
Jessica Sanchez: 5-1. Next week is likely an elimination week featuring Joshua vs. Jessica.
RANKING THE ALL-TIME FOURTH-PLACE FINISHES ON AMERICAN IDOL
1. Allison Iraheta, 2009:I know, my bias is showing here, but on sheer talent and presence, who has been better? Cases could be made for James Durbin and Chris Daughtry, but they were both much older than Allison, who as a teenager wowed America for most of the season during what was one of the series’ strongest-ever years. She would have probably won the whole thing during at least three or four of the other seasons.
2. James Durbin, 2011: His take on “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” remains one of the top five efforts in the show’s 11-year history.
3. Chris Daughtry, 2006: Just an out-and-out crime when he was eliminated in fourth place. My favorite Daughtry number on Idol will always be “Suspicious Minds.”
4. Tamyra Gray, 2002: Some felt she would win, or at least finish second. This early of an elimination was the first big Idol scandal.
5. Jason Castro, 2008: One of my all-time personal favorites. His rendition of “Hallelujah” will always be a keepsake.
6. LaToya London, 2004: Like Trenyce, Latoya was one of the series’ earliest divas and she worked it for all it was worth.
7. Josh Gracin, 2003: America fell in love with this soldier. That, coupled with a great personality and on-stage demeanor, vaulted him to heights his talent copuld not do on its own.
8. Hollie Cavanagh, 2012: She was never able to connect emotionally the audience, which is a shame, because the girl is probably no worse than second on this list in terms of natural talent.
9. Vonzell Solomon, 2005: “Best Of My love” was her best effort that season.
10. Lakisha Jones, 2007: She should have been voted off about four weeks earlier that season.
11. Michael Lynche, 2010: Once again, proving the 2010 season might have been the overall worst in Idol history.
