High 5 for 09/01/11: I wonder what the odds are for …

Posted by – August 31, 2011

My odds of dating supermodel Gisele Bundchen would not be good.

I’m not sure where the first item came from, but two friends forwarded the information to me this week … welcome to another day of the high 5:

WHO KNEW?: Statisticians have crunched the numbers and found the odds for just about everything. Here’s a sampling:

Bowling a 300 game: 11,500 to 1
Getting a hole in one: 5,000 to 1
Winning an Olympic medal: 662,000 to 1
Being murdered: 18,000 to 1
Getting away with murder: 2 to 1
Being audited by the IRS: 175 to 1
Dating a supermodel: 88,000 to 1
Being struck by lightning: 576,000 to 1

FOUND ON FACEBOOK: “Those raccoons must of had one heck of a party last night. That’s the fourth one I’ve seen passed out on this road.”

OVERRATED: Jane Hathaway

UNDERRATED: Anne Hathaway

BIRTHDAY BANTER: Favorite Bee Gees song? “Words.”

– Talk show host Dr. Phil is 61. (Now that Oprah is off the air, in a network sense, this guy qualifies as the most overrated bag of wind.)
– Singer Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees is 65. (The first album I ever owned was a Bee Gees record.)
– Singer Gloria Estefan is 54. (“Come on baby, do the conga … “)
In memoriam: Country singer Conway Twitty would have been 78. (If Conway Twitty had married Kitty Wells, her name would have been Kitty Twitty.)

High 5 for 08/31/11: This was a good day in 1974

Posted by – August 30, 2011

For me, The Partridge Family was the equivalent to fingernails on a blackboard … and on that note, welcome to the latest edition of the High 5:

TODAY: “On this day in 1974, The Partridge Family TV show ended. (And the world was a safer place. In addition, if the show had kept going, Danny Bonaduce’s reality TV career may have never gotten off the ground.)

FOUND ON FACEBOOK: “Alpacas!”

OVERRATED: Blake DeWitt.

UNDERRATED: Blake Toppmeyer.

BIRTHDAY BANTER: In the summer of ’66, “Brown-Eyed Girl” was my favorite song, and today Van Morrison is 66 … I imagine there is some numerological significance to that. I’ll have to have Matt Hopf explain it to me.

– Singer Van Morrison is 66. (Favorite Van Morrison song? “Brown-Eyed Girl,” of course.)
– Guitarist Rudolf Schenker of Scorpions is 63. (And yet another of my son’s favorite groups.)
– Actor Richard Gere is 62. (Favorite Richard Gere film? Pretty Woman.)
– Drummer Gina Schock of The Go-Go’s is 54. (It’s always a good day when there is a Go-Go reference.)

High 5 for 08/30/11: Young and hip … yeah, that’s the ticket

Posted by – August 29, 2011

Greetings from the 710th consecutive day of the High 5:

TODAY: On this day in 1146, European leaders outlawed the crossbow. (Whew! Good call.)

FOUND ON FACEBOOK: “Can I have Elvis’s portion ?”

OVERRATED: Dancing With The Stars.

UNDERRATED: Dance Fever with Denny Terrio.

BIRTHDAY BANTER: OK, quick … what night was The Mod Squad on? If you said Monday, you are correct.

– Actress Peggy Lipton is 64. (She was Julie Barnes on The Mod Squad, an ABC show that ran from 1968-73 and featured “three young, hip crime fighters.” One White, One Black, One Blonde, was the promotional hype line. The casting was intended to appeal to a youthful, counterculture audience. The basic premise was that the youthful investigators were offered work fighting crime as an alternative to being incarcerated themselves. The show’s primary premise centered on the three cops using their “youthful, personas as a guise to get close to the criminals they investigated.” Or something like that. The show was great the first year or two and then tailed off considerably.

– Actress Cameron Diaz is 39. (Yo, Cam. Been awhile since that last hit movie, eh?)

In memoriam: Former MLB pitcher Tug McGraw would have been 67. (Cancer claimed the colorful McGraw in 2004. He was the father of country singer Tim McGraw, who paid tribute to his dad’s final months and days with “Live Like You Were Dyin.’” Although Tug also enjoyed success with the Philadelphia Phillies, he was best known as a New York Met, where he coined the phrase “Ya Gotta Believe.” It’s hard to believe the Tugger has been gone seven years.)

– Tennis star Andy Roddick is 29. (Does anyone really care about tennis? Its TV ratings are lower than Major League Lacrosse.)

High 5 for 08/29/11: Long live ‘La Bamba’

Posted by – August 28, 2011

Los Lobos took "La bamba" to No. 1 on this day in 1987.

Is there anyone who doesn’t like to sing “La Bamba?” Why do I bring that up? Read on … in the latest edition of the High 5:

TODAY: In one of pop music’s most famous and beautiful turns of phrase, songwriter Don McLean called the date on which the world lost Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson “the Day the Music Died. ” But while three rising young pop stars may have died on February 3, 1959, their music certainly didn’t die with them. On August 29, 1987, nearly 30 years after the most famous plane crash in music history, Ritchie Valens, the youngest of that crash’s three famous victims, made a return of sorts to the top of the pop charts when his signature tune, “La Bamba,” became a No. 1 hit for the band Los Lobos, from Valens’ own hometown of Los Angeles

FOUND ON FACEBOOK: “Were you wearing any pants?”

OVERRATED: Chex mix with the pretzels and those little cement-like pieces of “bread.”

UNDERRATED: Chex mix with just the “chex” and maybe some Cheerios.

– Actress Rebecca DeMornay is 52. (Whatever happened to her career? She looked like the next big thing about 25 years ago.)
– Actor Elliott Gould is 73. (Another member of my all-time annoying actor list.)

High 5 for 08/28/11: Huggy Bear was The Man

Posted by – August 28, 2011

OVERRATED: Peabo Bryson.

UNDERRATED: Charlie Bryson.

– Actress Barbara Bach is 65. (Another former Bond girl.)
– Actor Jason Priestley is 42. (I once interviewed him. Nice guy.)
– Singer Shania Twain is 46. (The woman has never made a bad CD.)

High 5 for 08/27/11: What day would I pick?

Posted by – August 26, 2011

Happy 68th to Tuesday Weld, whose rise to Hollywood prominence began with the 1956 Alfred Hitchcock crime drama "The Wrong Man."

Welcome to the 707th consecutive day of the High 5:

TODAY: On this day in 2007, Michael Vick, the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, formally pleaded guilty before a Richmond, Va., judge to a federal felony charge related to running a dogfighting ring. That December, the 27-year-old Vick, once the highest-paid player in the NFL, was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison. (Fortunately, this story appears to have had a happy ending. Vick seems to have straightened his life out and is again a star quarterback.)

– Actress Tuesday Weld is 68. (She rose to fame as one of director Alfred Hitchcock’s favorites.)

– Actor Paul Reubens is 59. (A.k.a Pee Wee Herman.)

High 5 for 08/26/11: Do you know what I mean?

Posted by – August 25, 2011

Shirley Manson of Garbage.

The weekend, my friends, is almost here … until then. enjoy the High 5:

TODAY: On this day in 1939, television station W2XBS in New York City broadcast a doubleheader between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. The game, filmed with two cameras, was the first Major League Baseball game ever aired on television. (Seventy-two years later, I say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!)

FOUND ON FACEBOOK: “Newest Pet Peeve of mine lately: When people say, ‘You know what I mean?’ after everything!! No, please explain it to me, I’m an idiot….YES I know what you mean!! How about just ending your sentence with a period instead of that stupid phrase!” (That’s a very good post, do you know what I mean?)

OVERRATED: Grady Sizemore.

UNDERRATED: Grady Ginster.

BIRTHDAY BANTER: Shirley is no relation to Marilyn …

– Actor Macaulay Culkin is 31. (What are the odds of this guy ever having another hit movie?)
– Drummer Adrian Young of No Doubt is 42. (The only relevant name from that group is Gwen Stefani.)
– Singer Shirley Manson of Garbage. (I actually kind of liked that group about 15 years ago.)
– Actress Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee) is 18. (I just love that name.)

High 5 for 08/25/11: We’re still runnin’ to The Boss

Posted by – August 24, 2011

“Born to Run” was one of those albums that was so good the first time I heard it I knew Springsteen would soon be a megastar … and welcome to another edition of the High 5:

TODAY: On this day in 1975, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” album was released in U.S. record stores. The rest, as they say, is history. Long live The Boss.

FOUND ON FACEBOOK: “That awkward moment when someone’s zipper is down and you don’t know whether to tell, because you can’t explain why you were looking that low.”

OVERRATED: Valentine’s Day.

UNDERRATED: Halloween.

BIRTHDAY BANTER: Favorite James Bond film with Sean Connery as Agent 007? All of them.

– Game show host Monty Hall is 90. (“Let’s Make A Deal” has to rank among the top 10 all-time game shows.)
– Actor Sean Connery is 81. (After all of these years, he’s still the best James Bond … although I think current 007 Daniel Craig will eventually be regarded as a solid No. 2.)
– TV host Regis Philbin is 80. (I have never understood how Regis earned “star” status.)
– Movie director Tim Burton is 53. (Favorite Tim Burton film? Edward Scissorhands.)

Posted by – August 23, 2011

Today’s “Found on Facebook” strikes very close to home … Welcome to the latest edition of the High 5:

TODAY: On this day in 1998, the 10th season of The Simpsons began on Fox. Do you realize that show has been around since Ronald Reagan was president? Simply amazing.

High 5 for 08/23/11: Diane turns 62

Posted by – August 22, 2011

Shelley Long, as Diane Chambers on "Cheers."

I have purchased a lot of albums, cassettes, CDs and DVDs in my life, but not one of them has ever had anything to do with the Material Girl. Welcome to the latest edition of the High 5:

TODAY: On this day in 2008, Madonna began her “Sticky & Sweet” tour. When the tour ended it was the highest grossing tour on record. That seems appropriate since Madonna has always been rather gross.

BIRTHDAY BANTER: Favorite all-time Cheers character? “Coach,” and it’s not even close.
