mashMuch was made about Sunday night’s Breaking Bad finale shattering all sorts of cable records for a series finale. About 11.6 million reportedly watched, which in today’s splintered TV audience is amazing.

But what is really amazing are the record number of viewers for the most-watched network series finales back in the day. Remember, some of the following came during a period when all that was available to watch were programs on ABC, CBS and NBC — not the hundreds of choices we have today, thanks to satellite and cable.

MOST-WATCHED SERIES FINALES
1. M*A*S*H, 125 million, 1983
2. Cheers, 84.4 million, 1993
3. Seinfeld, 76 million, 1998
4. Friends, 52 million, 2004
5. Magnum P.I., 50 million, 1988
6. The Cosby Show, 44 million, 1992
7. All in the Family, 4o million, 1979
8. Family Ties, 36 million, 1989
