Laurie Metlis started crafting beautifully beaded bracelets and necklaces almost as soon as she and her husband relocated to Hannibal from Florida. Within a few months, they had become a breast cancer research fundraiser through the Hannibal County Club’s Pink Ribbon fundraiser and through sales in local shops.
Beading is a hobby for Metlis, but the cause is personal: She is a 17-year breast cancer survivor, and her mother is a 35-year survivor of the disease.
Below, Metlis demonstrates how to make her memory coil bracelets, which are sold in Danni Nicole’s and the Mark Twain Museum Gift Shop, to name two local establishments. (Another popular bracelet of hers, the Russian spiral, is sold in Ayers Pottery and in her online Etsy shop.)
