Carol Thompson’s daylily farm near Woodland (itself a dot on the map southwest of Palmyra) is one of the most breathtaking sights in Northeast Missouri. Nothing but brilliantly colored flowers as far as the eye can see. Until you visit her Blossoms and Blooms plant farm, it’s difficult to grasp just how many varieties of daylilies there are — or how easily a gardener can create new ones through hybridizing.

Here, Thompson demonstrates that process, which is as easy as rubbing one flower’s pollen onto another.
