The multiyear renovation of the Illinois Statehouse is nearly complete at a cost of $50 million. The State Journal-Register had a good overview of the project, which included plumbing, fire and electrical upgrades.
No one can deny that the Statehouse is a beautiful building and that the renovations were long overdue, but it’s difficult to justify that kind of expense when the state continues to face an unemployment rate of more than 9 percent and ongoing fiscal problems.
