Former NFL player Brock Olivo of Hermann, Mo., gave a great example of how newcomers should NOT enter the political arena without doing at least a little bit of homework. Video shot by Jason Rosenbaum of the Columbia Tribune has a hilarious series of comments by Olivo, one of many running to fill the seat of U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof.
Olivo is asked what makes him qualified to serve in Congress and his first response is "because I’m here." Reporters follow up with questions about his top issues. "I don’t know," Olivo said, adding that his mid-February candidate announcement was just the "beginning stage" of the campaign.
Olivo’s most unforgettable comment is that he could do a good job in Congress because — although he’s best known as a football player, he was in social studies class too.
When asked if he considers himself a conservative Republican, Olivo says "I’m a Republican for now."
Although this was the first chance for Olivo to talk about his run, it has not been his only chance to make an impression on voters. In another interview, Olivo does not challenge reports that he has never voted in an election. "I’m a recovering apathetic …" Olivo said.

I think it might be a good idea to take a look at what Mr. Olivo’s campaign is doing now that he is up and running. For example, take a look at the videos of him speaking along the campaign trail and take a look at the press he’s gotten around the state in the last month – there is no doubt that the others aren’t even in his league. How can this guy be saying more in those stump speeches than the elected office holders he’s running against? Because he understands the issues, is a prolific public speaker, and has a work ethic that is shocking, not to mention the lost art of leadership. He seems to be making quite the impact from what I’ve heard out of many counties throughout the Ninth District. I just thought that upon reading your post, and noticing that you only chose to mention the first 24 hours of his campaign, that it might be fair to take a look a look at the other 99 percent of his work, don’t you? As a resident of Northeast Missouri, I have followed Mr. Olivo’s career over the last decade and a half and I can tell you there is nobody, without never even meeting the guy, and I mean NOBODY, that I would rather be represented by. He stands for the highest level of integrity, hard work, and leadership than any elected official I can think of in my entire life. He is exactly the quality of person we need in politics. Welcome, Mr. Olivo! And Thank You! And Good Luck!

Brock Olivo is great news for the people of the ninth district. I am having an eye opening experience watching his candidacy, and I hope others are as well. What an exceptional young man. Brock brings a package to the table that is unmatched in all of state politics: honesty, hard work, transparency, integrity, and leadership. We should all be more welcoming of newcomers of this young man’s stature to the political realm – he’s exactly what we need! And, as far as I can tell, most people agree. This guy has what it takes to be a success in any realm, and we should be so fortunate to have him want to enter into the brutal world of politics. After all, maybe he’s exactly what is needed to turn that corner and bring true integrity back to public office. Way to go Brock. I’m behind you 100 percent.
