Sunday’s issue of Parade will include answers from President Barack and Michelle Obama to questions from the magazine’s readers.

Parade editor-in-chief Maggie Murphy and contributor Lynn Sherr put together a story about the stalemate in Washington D.C., what the Obama’s hope to accomplish and talk about the first four years in office.

President Obama on how he will talk to Republicans differently if he is re-elected:

PO:Republican voters, if you ask them about my particular policy positions, often agree with me. So there’s a difference between Republicans in Washington and Republican and Republican-leaning voters around the country. I think that after this election, we’ll be in a position to once again reach out to Republicans and say that the American people have rendered a judgment, and the positions we’re taking are well within what used to be considered bipartisan centrist approaches.

The President reacts to Mitt Romney’s remarks about the way Obama is making our country “far more like Europe, with a larger, more dominant, more intrusive government. …”:

PO: When you look at the policies I’ve promoted, they used to be considered bipartisan, mainstream ideas. What’s changed is not me. What’s changed is where the Republican Party’s gone. In fact, a lot of the things I’ve done are things that Mr. Romney, when he was governor of Massachusetts, seemed to promote. … What’s absolutely true is that we’ve had to take some emergency steps, like saving the auto industry, that weren’t free, that weren’t popular, but were the right thing to do.

Mrs. Obama on the conversation about the “superwoman.” Can women have it all?

MICHELLE OBAMA: I think that question limits us as women. I work with a lot of young women—we have interns coming in and out, and this is always one of the first questions they ask—and the thing I try to remind them is that we have fought so hard for choice and options with our lives, and we’re just getting to that point where we’re willing to embrace all the different facets of womanhood. I know that when I came out of college, what I wanted and what I thought I wanted were very different things. Then I get married and have a career and, lo and behold, now I’ve got kids. And how you feel about motherhood when your children are small and when they’re teenagers, that’s going to change.

Obama’s America opens in local theater

“2016: Obama’s America” is opening today in the AMC Quincy Mall theater. (View the trailer, above.)

The documentary is co-directed by conservative author and commentator Dinesh D’Souza. It is based on D’Souza’s book, “The Roots of Obama’s Rage.” It explores Obama’s early childhood in Indonesia, where he was reared by his mother, Ann Dunham and stepfather Lolo Soetoro. It details his later life in Hawaii in the home of his grandparents, then goes to Obama’s later life milestones.

This is not the first documentary to be a hot topic in a presidential election year. Liberal film-maker Michael Moore released “Fahrenheit 9/11″ during the 2004 campaign, that was critical of George W. Bush.

“An Inconvenient Truth” was released in 2006 — not a presidential year — about former Vice President Al Gore’s campaign against global warming.

Judge strikes down Missouri ballot language

Posted by – August 28, 2012

Cole County Judge Dan Green ruled Tuesday that Missouri ballot wording on a health care issue must be changed for the November election.

The ballot measure involves the health insurance exchanges required under the Affordable Care Act. It asks voters whether the state should establish a state-based insurance exchange or use one the federal government will establish.

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan’s original ballot summary stated: “Shall Missouri law be amended to deny individuals, families, and small businesses the ability to access affordable health care plans through a state-based health benefit exchange unless authorized by statute, initiative or referendum or through an exchange operated by the federal government as required by the federal health care act?”

Green ruled that Carnahan’s ballot summary “is not fair and sufficient.”

The new summary will read “Shall Missouri law be amended to prohibit the Governor or any state agency from establishing or operating state based health insurance exchanges unless authorized by a vote of the people or by the Legislature?”

The ruling is a victory for Republicans who objected to Carnahan’s wording.

Carnahan issued a statement that expressed her disappointment with the ruling.

“The court’s summary would provide Missouri voters with less information about the impact of the proposal and how Missouri individuals, families and small businesses can access affordable health care. Our office is reviewing the decision to consider out next steps,” Carnahan said.

Polls show Obama leading; analysis picks Romney

Posted by – August 24, 2012

While most national polls show Barack Obama with a lead in the presidential campaign, a University of Colorado analysis has Romney winning the November election.

Political science professors, Kenneth Bickers of Colorado University at Boulder and Michael Berry of CU Denver, used models from previous elections to predict the Electoral College outcome and the popular vote. The study shows Romney getting 52.9 percent of the popular vote to 47.1 percent for Obama in a two-candidate race. Romney was expected to win the Electoral College tally with 321 votes, well beyond the 270 needed for election.

A story on the University of Boulder website, indicates that the model would have predicted all presidential elections since 1980, including the 2000 election where Al Gore won the popular vote, while George W. Bush won the Electoral College vote.

Obama is still leading in a sampling of heads-up polls carried on Real Clear Politics. Four of seven polls show Obama with a margin of 1 to 4 percent. A Gallup Tracking poll shows Obama and Romney tied at 46 percent each. Romney has a 1 percent lead in the latest FOX News and Rasmussen Tracking polls.

Anti-Sullivan ad goes up on Quincy TV

Posted by – August 17, 2012

The Illinois Senate race in Western Illinois got hotter this week with a broadcast advertisement attacking Sen. John Sullivan, D-Rushville.

Adam Andrzejewski, who ran in the 2010 GOP gubernatorial primary, is sponsoring the ad, which accuses Sullivan of supporting big government, pushing to borrow billions and voting to raise his own pay.

That charge brought a quick reply from Sullivan’s campaign.

“I have never voted for a pay increase and I never will. In fact, I have voted to cut my own pay, taken furlough days to reduce my pay and refused to accept travel reimbursements for special and extended sessions,” Sullivan said.

Randy Frese, the Republican challenger from Paloma, did not get any advance notice of the campaign ad, according to Deputy Campaign Manager Kimber Beckler.

“It wasn’t our ad, but it’s hard to argue with its facts,” Beckler said.
