Three teams vying for bids in the state semifinals Saturday afternoon, here are picks. As always, I continue to run laps around fellow Herald-Whig sports writer. He has promises a return to the weight room and to try to get better week by week.
Last weeks record: 3-0
Overall record: 137-28 (83 percent)
Topp’s record: 132-33 (80 percent)
MissouriBlair Oaks 20, Palmyra 17
The Falcons are big, strong and only lost to Moberly, which finished its season with only one loss and was ranked as high as No. 4 in Class 4. The Panthers of course, are undefeated, but haven’t been seriously challenged since Week 2 against Centralia. How will the Panthers handle the pressure of being in what should be a close game?
Kevin Miles will have Palmyra ready, but a Blair Oaks team that has been in the quarterfinals more recently will sneak pass Palmyra.
Maroa-Forsyth 31, Central 13
Jack Hockaday is the real deal. Will the Panthers be able to find a way to slow down the defending Class 1A champions passing attack? Central will hold its own early, but fade in the second half.
Rock Island Alleman 27, Quincy Notre Dame 20
Alleman is turnover-prone and hasn’t seen a team that can pass like the Raiders can this season. Giving the Pioneers a slight edge due to home-field advantage.
