2011-12 SEASON OUTLOOK

Coach: Todd Plattner (65-25 at Central, fourth season; 271-156 overall, 16th season).
2010-11 record: 27-4 (5-0, first in the WCC South).
Returning starters: G Austin Dormire, 5-11, Sr.; G Alex Walter, 6-1, Sr.
Other returning letterwinners: F Adam DeRousse, 6-2, Sr.; G Douglas Weese, 5-8, Jr.
New Faces: F Marcus Landes, 6-1, Jr.; F Nathan Knuffman,6-0, Sr.; G Cole Phillips, 5-5, Soph.; F Caden Miller, 6-1, Sr.
Key losses: F Zac Main, C Spencer Rhea, G Jacob Conley, G Brandon Ihrig, F Tanner Genenbacher.
Outlook: The Panthers face a sizable task coming off back-to-back regional championships. They simply don’t have as much height.
That will put pressure on DeRousse to be Central’s tough man in the post as he will likely draw the toughest defensive assignment. He’ll also be expected to play big on the boards and give Walter, the team’s top returning scorer, some help offensively.
“Adam is the type of post player who can score around the basket and also pop out and shoot the three,” Plattner said.
The addition of Knuffman should add some toughness and tenacity to the frontcourt as well.
Dormire’s return gives the Panthers a smart, savvy floor leader who has been a part of the varsity program since his freshman year. He’s more a lockdown defender than an all-out scorer, but his presence offensively should create opportunities for the likes of Weese and Phillips, who are capable of extending defenses with their perimeter games.
