Woodworth will try to duplicate April success

Posted by – August 27, 2008

Denny Woodworth will try for a second straight Deery Brothers Summer Series tour victory on his home track Sunday night. Woodworth dominated the late model field back in April and will attempt to be the first driver since Rob Toland in 2004 to win two Deery events at Quincy Raceways in the same calendar year.

Sunday will mark the 20th Deery race at 8000 Broadway and should attract a field of about 30-ish late models for the Labor Day weekend show. There were 42 cars on hand in April, and only once in the last five Deery shows in Quincy has there been fewer than 42. But let’s be realistic — it’s late in the season, Boone McLaughlin has a sizable series points lead and many of the fringe drivers will not be here if for no other reason than the economy.

One driver who will definitely be on hand is newly crowned Quincy track and IMCA national champ Jason Frankel. Sunday will serve as a sort of coronation for Frankel, who is putting the finishing touches on a tremendous season. He also won the 34 Raceway track championship in West Burlington, Iowa, and has clinched the first Stevie Dirt Regional Rankings title.

One of the few things Frankel has not accomplished this year is winning a Deery race, but the law of percentages indicate Sunday could be his night. Not only is the 31-year-old hotshoe on a serious roll, but eight of the previous 19 Deery races in Quincy have been won by local drivers. Mark Burtgtorf has six of those victories, with Lonnie Bailey and Woodworth claiming the others.

Frankel reigns as IMCA national champion

Posted by – August 26, 2008

The following was just posted on the IMCA Web site at about 1 p.m. today. Congratulations, Jason!

VINTON, Iowa — Two wins on the final weekend and a track
championship bonus helped make Jason Frankel a national champion.
The
Quincy, Ill., driver reigns over IMCA’s J & J Steel Late Model
division. His first career national crown came in a tight contest with
Todd Cooney of Des Moines, the 1997 and 2002 king.
Completing the
top five were Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, Ill., Mike Murphy of Colona, Ill.,
and three-time champ Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown, Iowa, the 1993, 2006
and 2007 titlist.
Frankel earns a $5,500 share of the $21,300 point fund to be paid to top 20 drivers in final standings.
He won a dozen features and picked up 19 bonus points along with the track title at Quincy Raceways. Frankel also topped the standings at 34 Raceway in West Burlington.
Cooney collected 14 checkers on the year, including his career 100th, along with 15 bonus points at Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa.
Guss led all drivers in the division with 15 feature wins. Murphy had six wins and was champion at Davenport Speedway in Davenport, Iowa, and Quad City Raceway in East Moline, Ill. DeFrance won five times and was track champion at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway in Des Moines, Iowa.
National
rookie of the year is Mike Garland of DeWitt, Iowa, a two-time feature winner
and 10th overall in the unofficial national standings.
The
2008 Late Model point season ran from April 25 through Aug. 24. Track
officials have until noon on Monday, Sept. 22 to notify IMCA of
corrections affecting their top 15 before standings become official.
National
standings are based on drivers’ best 20 finishes out of their first 55
starts. Bonus points, equal to the average weekly car count at tracks
holding a minimum of 10 sanctioned events, are awarded to track
champions.
The higher average is used to award bonuses when drivers
win more than one track title; pro-rated bonuses are given at tracks
where fewer than 10 weekly events are held.

Only yesterday it seemed like April …

Posted by – August 25, 2008

Sit back, take a deep breath and start scrolling your way through some bonus Monday morning coverage. You better grab a Pop Tart and a glass of Diet Mountain Dew, because you’re going to be here awhile. Enjoy!

THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD

What an amazing night at the old Bullring. Three of the four championships were decided by a point — or less. Congrats to Michael Long in the modifieds for rallying to win a second straight title and to Aaron Brocksieck in the hobby stocks for holding on to win his first championship. Both drivers landed on top of the standings by one, thin point.

And then there’s the stock cars. Jeff Mueller was awarded the title over Chris Wibbell after the two tied for the championship. Mueller won more features, so the crown was his.

At the opposite end of the spectrum was late model ace Jason Frankel, who capped off a marvelous points season with his first-ever title at Quincy, and he did so in resounding fashion. Frankel won his fourth feature to put the final touch on a 25-point championship cushion.

It seems like only yesterday it was April, and here it is the end of the points races. It was a tremendous season in all four classes. The long and winding road to the titles ended Sunday night in spectacular style. Every feature race had the crowd on the edge of its seat, especially the three with the championships on the line.

Looking at the calendar, I can see it is only eight months until the start of the 2009 season. Let the countdown begin.

NOT SO FAST

I don’t mean to sound as if the season has totally ended. There’s still plenty of "specials" racing on tap through Sept, 21, starting next Sunday when the Deery Brothers Summer Series comes calling. We’ll be here until the end. Heck, we’ll be here all winter, too!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Mark Burgtorf won his 200th career late model feature Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. Burgtorf had been sitting on No. 199 since early July. Burgtorf’s milestone victory came in a $3,000-to-win MLRA event.

STELLAR FIELD

There were nine current or former track champs in the starting fields Sunday night: Mark Burgtorf, Lonnie Bailey, Michael Long, Tony Dunker, Robbie Reed, Wyatt Lantz, Vance Wilson, Steve Carlin aand Dave Wietholder.

400 AND COUNTING

The 400-caution mark for the season was reached during the late model feature when Jason Perry had mechanical problems. By the end of the night, the total had grown to 407. Last year’s 493 mark is still within reach.

In case you are wondering, the modifieds have caused 200 yellow flags, the most of any series.

LONG REACHES 33

Michael Long has now won 33 races, three shy of his 2007 track record. He’s planning to do some traveling, so it’s uncertain if he will be on hand enough to establish a new mark or not. He told me Sunday night he will definitely be in town for the $2,500-to-win show on Sept. 14.

STEVIE DIRT REGIONAL RANKINGS

With one week remaining to earn SDRR points, the only questions remaining are the final order behind late model champion Jason Frankel and modified king Michael Long. There will be some last-week flip-flopping in the middle of the pack, but there’s no doubt who the most two most dominant drivers of 2008 have been.

Drivers earn feature points on a 25-20-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 scale at selected regional tracks.

The following late model and modified rankings reflect action through Aug. 24.

FINAL DRIVER DOMINANCE INDEX TOP 10

Aaron Brocksieck not only won the hobby stock title Sunday night, he clinched the overall Driver Dominance Index (DDI) crown. The percentage of points he earned in his class ranks No. 1 among all drivers in all series.

Michael Long was tops in the modifieds and Jason Frankel the leader in late models.

Simply divide the number of points a driver has earned by the
maximum number available for a driver’s percentage. The DDI shows how much
specific drivers dominate their divisions, in addition to what they do in the raw
points standings.

Stock cars are not eligible to be listed since that series’ heat races do not award points.

Here’s a look at the final top 10 drivers following Aug. 24 races:

1. Aaron Brocksieck, hobby stocks, 577 of 645, .895 (TOP HOBBY STOCK DRIVER)
2. Wes Mayfield, hobby stocks, 576 of 645, .893
3. Steve Carlin, hobby stocks, 565 of 645, .876

Posted by – August 24, 2008

WHEATLAND, Mo. — The wait is over for Mark Burgtorf.

The 14-time Quincy Raceways late model track champ won his 200th career feature Saturday night in a $3,000-to-win MLRA event at Lucas Oil Speedway. The victory was Burgtorf’s third feature win this summer for the No. 7 team’s "outlaw" engine.

Burgtorf had been stuck on career win No. 199 since a July 13 feature victory at Quincy.

Burgtorf will be racing tonight at Quincy in the season championship races, then head to Granite City, Ill., for a Northern All Stars event Friday, followed by the $10,000-to-win Prairie Dirt Classic in Fairbury, Ill., on Saturday. A week from tonight, Burgtorf will be back in Quincy for the IMCA Deery Brothers tour race.

Frankel comes up short in bid for Lee County title

Posted by – August 23, 2008

DONNELLSON, Iowa — Jason Frankel lost his bid for the first of what he hoped would be three late model track championships this weekend when the Quincy, Ill., driver ended up second to Jay Johnson of West Burlington, Iowa, on the strength of a tiebreaker.

Johnson won Friday night’s season points finale at Lee County Speedway, and coupled with Frankel’s sixth-place feature finish, the two drivers wound up tied in the standings. Johnson was awarded the track championship because he had one more feature victory than Frankel.

We could witness history Sunday night at QR

Posted by – August 23, 2008

There’s a good chance that Sunday night will produce at least one and as many as three of the closest track championships in Quincy Raceways history.

• Three drivers (Tony Dunker, Michael Long, Steven DeLonjay) are separated by five points in the modified division as points racing comes to a close.

• Three points are what stand between leader Chris Wibbell and runner-up Jeff Mueller in the stock car series.

• Five points separate top dog Aaron Brockieck and his closest pursuer Wes Mayfield in the hobby stocks.

Here are the closest finishes in track history:

Todd Reichert def. Steve Carlin by 1 point, 2007 hobby stocks
Gary Dreyer def. Joe Hooper by 1 point, 1998 "B" modifieds
Hank DeLonjay def. Michael Long by 2 points, 2004 "A" modifieds
Steven DeLonjay def. James Leffew by 2 points, 2006 hornets
Jeff Klingele def. Hal Roach by 2 points, 1983 pure stock
Steven DeLonjay def. Levi Long by 3 points, 2007 hornets
Sam Burgtorf def. Hank DeLonjay by 3 points, 1998 "A" modifieds
Lonnie Bailey def. Brent Slocum by 4 points, 2004 late models
Darin Walker def. Sonny Smyser by 6 points, 1989 "A" modifieds
Hank DeLonjay def. Lonnie Bailey by 6 points, 1984 limited sportsman
Robbie Reed def. Hank DeLonjay by 7 points, 2006 modifieds

‘Showdown Sunday’ approaches at QR

Posted by – August 22, 2008

They’ve raced all season to reach what awaits Sunday night, and as fans we have watched all spring and summer to do the same.

Championships will be won and reputations shaped.

It’s time for "Showdown Sunday."

Titles will be decided in all four classes at Quincy Raceways, and three of those series should go down to the final lap of the feature.

Jason Frankel has what appears to be an insurmountable lead in the late models, but the modifieds are a different story. It’s a toss-up between Tony Dunker, Michael Long and wunderkind Steven DeLonjay, a trio  separated by five points.

The stock car title will be won by either Chris Wibbell and Jeff Mueller. The Dallas City Ironman leads Mueller by a scant three points. In the hobby stocks, Aaron Brocksieck hopes to hold off Wes Mayfield, who trails by five points.

There figures to be a minimum of three first-time champs crowned: Frankel, Wibbell or Mueller and Brocksieck or Mayfield. And if DeLonjay could pull of a minor miracle, all four classes could have rookie kings.

I can’t wait.

QUINCY RACEWAYS SUNDAY NIGHT GUIDE

Race time: 6:30 p.m.

Weather forecast: Temperature Sunday night should be in the low 60s with a chance of rain. (Aw come on, not this week, puh-leez.)

THE SKINNY

Late Models: Most of the attention Sunday night will be focused on Jason Frankel, and rightly so, but there are some other drivers who will be striving for career best points finishes. Justin Reed, Jason Perry, Bill Genenbacher, Dustin Neese and Nick Ingalls all have good shots for their best-ever positions … If 14-time track champ Mark Burgtorf finishes second to Frankel, it will mark the first time in his long career at Quincy Raceways he will wind up runner-up in points … Sunday’s final points standings will not alter The Herald-Whig’s all-time (1975-2008) late model track rankings. But there will be some movement in the IMCA era (1998-2008) rankings, including Reed moving into the top 10. If he holds on to his current third spot in track points he will likely move into the No. 8 spot in the IMCA era top 10.

Most recent feature winner: Lonnie Bailey, Aug. 17.

Pick to click:
Jason Frankel. He wins his first title in style.

Modifieds: Expect the unexpected has been the unofficial motto for this series this month. I have no idea how the Tony Dunker-Michael Long-Steven DeLonjay war to settle the score will turn out. It’s easy to make an argument for each, but in a case like this it could very well be experience that wins out, which would thrust Dunker and Long into the spotlight. And if you fully fall for that line of reasoning, just remember who won last week’s feature … In case you weren’t keeping track and wading through all the numbers that regularly show up on this site, only four different drivers have won modified features this season. Compare that to late models (9), stock cars (5) and hobby stocks (6) … Dunker is assured of climbing to No. 2 in The Herald-Whig all-time modified rankings, while Long will move to No. 4 … Following the season, there will be an extensive review of each of the series at the track, including a look at how the various all-time rankings have been reshaped.

Most recent feature winner: Steven DeLonjay, Aug. 17

Pick to click: Michael Long. But will it be enough for the title?

Stock Cars: Jeff Mueller has won exactly half (8) of the stock car features. Chris Wibbell has won one. Muller has won four heat races. Wibbell has won none. But Wibbell leads the points race by three. What gives? Mueller has had a handful of DQs and way-back finishes, while Wibbell has run in the top 10 all 16 features and 12 times has broken the top five. Consistency always pays in the long run … The last driver to win a title without winning a points feature was Robbie Reed in the 2006 modifieds … There’s also two other tight points races to watch in this division. Dave Wietholder leads Steve Steve Steinkuhler by five points in the battle for third place and Levi Long is one point in front of Andrew Griffin in the competition for the sixth and seventh positions.

Most recent feature winner: Jeff Mueller, Aug. 17

Pick to click: Jeff Mueller. But will he come up short in the big picture?

Hobby Stocks: It’s hard to believe, but defending champ Steve Carlin has yet to pick up a feature victory after winning 12 in 2007. He might be a solid dark horse pick on Sunday night … Points leader Aaron Brocksieck and James Leffew lead the class with 10 top-five finishes … Jim Powell last week became the third driver in series history to reach 4,000 career track points on the bomber/hobby stock series. Powell (4,056) trails only Eddie Dieker (5,731) and Carlin (4,808). Powell would be even higher up the list if he hadn’t taken a few years off to run modifieds … Victory totals since the bombers became hobby stocks at the start of 2007: Carlin (29), Brocksieck (17), Leffew (12) and Bobby Anders (11).

Most recent feature winner: Wes Mayfield, Aug. 17.

Pick to click: Aaron Brocksieck. Game, set, match.
