Frankel comes up short in bid for Lee County title

DONNELLSON, Iowa — Jason Frankel lost his bid for the first of what he hoped would be three late model track championships this weekend when the Quincy, Ill., driver ended up second to Jay Johnson of West Burlington, Iowa, on the strength of a tiebreaker.

Johnson won Friday night’s season points finale at Lee County Speedway, and coupled with Frankel’s sixth-place feature finish, the two drivers wound up tied in the standings. Johnson was awarded the track championship because he had one more feature victory than Frankel.

Matt Strassheim held off Denny Woodworth for second in the feature, followed by Terry Neal and Jay Chenoweth.

Here’s how Friday night’s feature affected the top 10 Stevie Dirt Regional Rankings:

1. Jason Frankel, Quincy, Ill., 478 points
2. Mark Burgtorf, Quincy, Ill., 322
3. Lonnie Bailey, Quincy, Ill., 245
4. Denny Woodworth, Mendon, Ill., 233
5. Justin Reed, Quincy, Ill., 195
6. Keith Pratt, Quincy, Ill., 190
7. Matt Bailey, Quincy, Ill., 156
8. Jay Johnson, West Burlington, Iowa, 152
9. Tom Goble, Burlington, Iowa, 139
10. Tom Bowling, Danville, Iowa, 136
(a full top 25, plus bubble drivers, will appear as usual on Monday)

In modified action at Lee County, red-hot Rich Smith of Davenport, Iowa, continued his late-season surge with a first-place finish feature ahead of Bill Roberts of Burlington. Rounding out the top five were Jeff Waterman, Brandon Savage and Brandon Rothzen.

The latest SDRR for modifieds:

1. Michael Long, Quincy, Ill., 466 points
2. David Holder, Clarence, Mo., 299
3. Dean McGee Sr., Galesburg, Ill., 298
4. Bill Roberts Jr., Burlington, Iowa, 288

Congratulations to Mark Burgtorf in winning his 200th career late model feature Saturday night at the MLRA event at Wheatland, MO.

Best of luck to the #7 team in tonight’s Quincy Raceways Season Championship events. I wish I could be there to witness the action but work beckons.
