Drum roll, please … New qualifying format for late models, modifieds is official

August 24, 2012 5 Comments

Quincy Raceways is altering the landscape of both its UMP late model and modified divisions. Both classes will now be qualifying and both will feature a “Quick 6″ dash, beginning Sunday night. Needless to say, both series will take on a new look.

The format for qualifying is still being ironed out as you read this, but the rest of the new formats are in place. We should have the final details later Thursday.

Here is the information provided by track officials (we’ll have more on this in the days ahead):

FAST DASH
– The Fast Dash takes the place of the final scheduled heat race.
– The top six (6) cars from qualifying are locked in.
– The fast qualifier will roll six-sided dice during opening ceremonies.
– The number on the dice will be the number of cars inverted for the Fast Dash.
– The Fast Dash finish will set the lineup for the first three (3) rows of the “A” feature

QUALIFYING RACE
– The qualifying races are the first races on the track prior to the Fast Dash
– Cars qualifying seventh on back are locked into the qualifying races
– The qualifying races start straight-up based on qualifying time.
– The finish of the qualifying races set the remainder of the “A” feature field and any consolation races if needed
– The winner of the first qualifying race starts seventh in the “A” feature, the winner of the second qualifying race starts eighth in the “A” Feature, etc.

RACE FORMAT (up to 17 cars)
– Top six (6) in time trials transfer to the Fast Dash.
– The fast qualifier will roll six-sided dice during opening ceremonies
– The number on the dice will be the number of cars inverted for the Fast Dash
– The remainder of the field will run one (1) qualifying race (up to 11 cars).
– The finish of the qualifying race determines the remainder of the “A” feature starting field (i.e., the Winner starts seventh)

RACE FORMAT (18-24 cars)
– Top six (6) in time trials transfer to the Fast Dash.
– The fast qualifier will roll six-sided dice during opening ceremonies
– The number on the dice will be the number of cars inverted for the Fast Dash
– The remainder of the field will run two (2) qualifying races (up to 11 cars) of between 6-9 cars.
– The finish of the qualifying race determines the remainder of the “A” feature starting field
– The finish of the first qualifying race is the (remainder) inside row.
– The finish of the Second Qualifying Race is the (remainder of the) outside row.

RACE FORMAT (25-33 cars)
– Top six (6) in time trials transfer to the Fast Dash.
– The fast qualifier will roll six-sided dice during opening ceremonies.
– The number on the dice will be the number of cars inverted for the Fast Dash.
– The remainder of the field will run three (3) Qualifying Races (6-9 cars each)
– Top four (4) finishers transfer to “A” Feature
– Transfer cars start staggered straight-up behind Fast Dash cars.
– The remainder of the qualifying race finishers transfer to one (1) consolation race (up to 15 cars).
– Top five (5) finishers transfer to “A” Feature

Fast Time Provisional

– The fastest non-qualifier is eligible for the 24th starting position.
– If the position is not filled by the provisional, it will be open to the next eligible car from the consolation race finish.

If the need arises, additional plans are in place for even higher car counts in each class.
