The Dirty Thirty

Dirty-30-20131. Tony Dunker: The year was 2001. Gary Dreyer edged Tony for the “B” modified track title by seven points. Twelve years later, those seven points are the difference in Tony going for a fourth track title Sunday night — or a fifth. The importance of that fifth championship is explained in the following entry.

Steven DeLonjay: Chasing history.

Steven DeLonjay: Chasing history.

2. Steven DeLonjay: In all likelihood, Steven will join an extremely select club Sunday night. Only four other drivers — Mark Burgtorf (14), Hank DeLonjay (13), Steve Fraise (9)  and Steve Carlin (5) — have won five or more track championships. If Steve-O puts the finishing touches on this year’s modified title he will become the fifth.
3. Jason Perry: Jason’s Sunday night feature victor was his first since June 3, 2012.
4. Dave Wietholder: Dave’s eight runner-up feature finishes in the modifieds are the most in a season in that series since we began tracking that category in 2008. In those five years, he has 23 runner-up showings, Steven DeLonjay has  19 and Jared Schlipman (now in a late model) 11.
5. Denny Woodworth: Capping Denny’s championship season would be a Sunday night feature victory. That would end a 42-race streak dating to Sept. 5, 2011.

Mark Burgtorf

6. Mark Burgtorf: Mark is the leading money winner in the UMP late model era (since 2012) at the track. He has pocketed $17,235 the past two seasons.
7. Abe Huls: Sunday night marked the first time since July 14 that The Honest One did not win either a heat or feature (or both).
8. Austen Becerra: In 1 1/2 seasons, Austen has won 32 races in a sport compact. No other driver in the series is close to even 20 victories in the three years the series has been around.
9. Tanner Klingele: Next to Tony Dunker, has there been a more consistent driver this season in the sport mods?
10. Brandon Savage: Here’s hoping The Macho Man is in the pits from the bginning of the 2014 season. The stocks get a little stronger each season and if Brandon and Beau-dacious Taylor are around all year starting next April it should be a heckuva class.

11. Michael Long: It’s about time for Michael to make a run at another modified title at 8000 Broadway.
12. Terry Houston: Terry, take that “For Sale” sign off the car right now — unless the sale price is going toward a 2014 ride.
13. Justin Reed: Here’s another guy we want to see every week next season, be it in a modified or a late model.
14. Shawn Deering: Since that first feature win is finally out of the way, is the first track title the next thing on the checklist?
15. Ricky Frankel: Ricky’s first full season at the Bullring will probably yield a fifth-place finish in late model points. Not too bad.

Jake Powers

16. Keith Pratt: I can’t wait to see a full summer of The Kool Kat, DeLonjay and Wietholder.
17. Jeff DeLonjay: If Jeff can avoid the mechanical woes next season, I think he can make a run at the No. 3 car for the sport mod title.
18. Jake Powers: The Snake needs a victory of some sort Sunday night to avoid going winless in his rookie season in a stock car. That comes after a 2012 season that saw him win the final hobby stock championship before the plug was pulled on that series. He also won 16 races, the most in that class since 2007.
19. Chris Spalding: Here’s another interesting part of the 2014 modified equation. What kind of impact could he make on the series running full-time?
20. Jake Griffin: Fireball’s top showing this season has been a runner-up performance back on May 12.

Pat Dunker

Pat Dunker

21. Pat Dunker: Do we need a steel cage to decide the winner of the Skipp-Alex Baker feud?
22-tie. Russ Coultas:
22-tie. Jared Schlipman: Little Schlip has one week left to get that first feature win in his rookie season in a late model.
24. Jerry Jansen: I’m guessing Jerry’s favorite NFL team is the Detroit Lions.
25-tie. Adam Birck: Now that was a rough Sunday night.
25-tie. Robbie Reed: Trivia question … when Robbie was his 2006 track championship, who finished in second place seven points behind? (Answer at the bottom)
25-tie. Brandon Lambert: Too bad Brandon did not have that car running like it is now a few months ago.
28. Ron Elbe: Nice to see the veteran closing the campaign on a positive note. Ron has five top-10 finishes in the last six shows.
29-tie. Todd Reed: Few drivers have had a better last month than Todd: Three top-three finishes in the last four shows.
29-tie. Kim Abbott: No matter how the final points shake out, Kim has had another excellent season. Hope she’s back to make a run for that first female championship in 2014.
29-tie. Laine Van Zant: LVZ has been rather quiet since mid-August.

Answer: Hank DeLonjay was second to Robbie Reed in the 2006 modified standings.
