By about early June it was obvious that the overriding question in the sport mod division was not if Tony Dunker would win a second straight title, but rather by how much.
Dunker drove away from the rest of the competition to coast to not only a second straight series title, but his second consecutive Stevie Dirt All-Dirt Team Driver of the Year honor. A series champion is not necessarily guaranteed Driver of the Year accolades, but in Dunker’s case it was a foregone conclusion. After all, Dunker never finished lower than second in a feature all season (and only once in the past two years) and will enter 2014 with nine straight feature victories.
There is speculation that Dunker may switch to the UMP modifieds, but nothing official yet from the Dunker compound. If he does not change series, he will seek to become the fourth driver in any kind of modified to win three (or more) straight series titles in track history. Others in that select club are Steven DeLonjay, Hank DeLonjay and Sam Burgtorf.
This year marked the second time in his career Dunker won two straight series championships. He won back-to-back “B” modified crowns in 2003-04.
Tanner Klingele earned his second straight All-Dirt Team notice, capturing a first-team berth this season after a second-team choice in 2012. Brad Holtmeyer also picked up a second straight second-team spot.
