Ask Kenny D

2014QRLogoEvery so often I like to toss new track manager Ken Dobson a question I get via email or phone call. Here’s one that just arrived (again), and one that has been asked numerous times in recent seasons.

Question: Hey Kenny D, one of the major complaints from fans for the last five or six years concerns the lack of a program, even a simple sheet to match drivers and numbers. When the Scotts owned the track, there was a weekly program with points standings, driver information, etc. Any chance of some form of at least a simple program in 2014?

programKenny D: Yes. People in Quincy might not be aware of it, but last week we launched our first issue of our regional racing tabloid aimed at keeping fans informed of the stories of our race tracks called “Hammer Down.”  The first issue was more targeted to the Springfield area because we had a trade show there.  The next issue is going to be very Quincy-oriented because we will mainly be distributing it at the annual Quincy Mall Stock Car Show.

But future issues will be very balanced between coverage from all three of our tracks and it will be handed out monthly at each track.

On a nightly basis we hope to have a very basic nightly program with driver names, car numbers, points etc.  In fact, in today’s day and age there’s no reason that copies of that couldn’t be run after the pill draw is closed and handed out during hot laps so you are actually looking at tonight’s lineups.  But that’s going to take some planning to pull off right. That may be a lot to ask right off the bat in our first season, but yes, a program of some fashion will be at the Bullring this season.

good to hear kenny, it’s the little things that will bring QR back to where it was. we don’t need anything fancy, but those programs were always appreciated. i can’t tell you how many friends of mine have said the same thing last few seasons.

Yes that would be nice to have. They use to have the race programs for sale for a $1.00 at the gate when you walked into grand stands. Also Kenny get some them young ones out there walking around through the grandstands selling Hotdogs, sodas and popcorn to crowd be amazed what that do to your refreshment stand profit. Albert and Bob Scott did that for years and always worked out good them it seemed. Some people don’t want miss a thing of the action and visiting with their buddy’s.

Kenny d was wondering if the ump modified payout was going too stay the same as last year?

  4. Kenny D says:

Yes Travis. UMP Modified payout will remain the same. All classes will remain the same except UMP Late Models which are receiving a much needed bump in purse. With that, I feel like the purse structure for all of our classes will be in line with or exceed other area tracks.

Kenny D. I remember in the programs there was always a featured driver every week. Any chances of that happening again. I would bet Steve could take care of that interview. It could also help us on the Hall Of Fame is there was just a simple kind of ballot in each one that could be turned in.

We will keep that in mind as we figure out what to do with it Charlie. Steve does plenty for the track already and some of the longer pieces about drivers we will save for our monthly tabloid where space isn’t so restricted.

On the program we have the issue of quality vs. timeliness. If it’s something we can print on a higher speed printer, we can make it have tonight’s lineups in it (make it available 15 mins after the pill draw closes assuming I sort out the workflow) but in doing that it’s going to basically be a black and white piece of 11×17 paper or card stock folded in half due to time constraints.

Or, we can give up the timeliness and have a better quality piece that’s printed a few days in advance. I personally like the more timely information angle as long as people lower their expectations on quality.
