All five weekly racing series are again in action Sunday night. Catch them while you can. Not only is the season winding down, but only three of the classes will be running Aug. 17 (sport mods, stock cars, sport compacts) when two divisions of sprint cars invade.
This week’s pick to click: I think it’s about time for Ricky Frankel to return to victory lane. He’s been kind of quiet since going back-to-back on May 4 and 11.
Don’t forget about: Justin Reed. Like Frosty the Snowman, he’ll return again some day.
That’s a fact, Jack: Only twice this season have the late models had more than three cautions in a show. The last time the late models reached double figures in yellow flags was July 6, 2012 when the series saw 18 cautions in a good old-fashioned midsummer crashfest.
This week’s pick to click: Michael Long. He’s way overdue. It’s been more than a month (June 29) since he last took the checkers.
Don’t forget about: Brian Lynn. If you’re looking for a semi-dark horse, this could be the guy.
That’s a fact, Jack: Michael Long has been the fastest qualifier four straight shows and seven total (out of 11).
This week’s pick to click: Why not two in a row for Tanner Klingele? When Klingele broke through with his first victory last Sunday that meant all five members of the sport mod Group of Death (Klingele, Joey Gower, Tony Dunker, Brad Holtmeyer, Bobby Anders) had posted at least one win this season.
Don’t forget about: Brandon Lennox, who is a good candidate t enlarge the Group of Death to six by next season.
That’s a fact, Jack: Tony Dunker’s six second-place feature finishes are the most in any of the five weekly series. Closest to Dunker are Brandon Lambert (4) in the sport compacts, Pat Dunker (4) in the sport compacts and Dave Wietholder (4) in the modifieds.
This week’s pick to click: Terry Houston. That suggestion from Dave Moore (“Drive fast, turn left”) has seemed to help.
Don’t forget about: Beau Taylor. He’ll get to victory lane at some before the end of the season.
That’s a fact, Jack: Four of the last five feature winners in this series have started in the third row or deeper. Three of those winners, Abe Huls (twice) and Brandon Savage, started eighth.
This week’s pick to click: Brandon Lambert. This is the week he kicks the door down. He’s finished second four times and third once over the past five shows.
Don’t forget about: Austen Becerra. If Lambert does pull off the upset, Becerra won’t be far behind.
That’s a fact, Jack: Austen Becerra won last week’s feature starting ninth, matching his accomplishment from July 20. Only Tony Dunker in the sport mods has started deeper and won a main event. Dunker started 10th on July 6 and charegd to his first feature victory of the season.
