Remembering one of baseball’s most lopsided trades 45 years ago … and other important dates in my life

387_Lou_Brock_2_fThere’s nothing better to start the week than a little trivia.

I’m sure most baseball fans realize today is the 45th anniversary of what is considered to be one of the most lopsided trades in major league history.

On June 15, 1964, the St. Louis Cardinals traded pitchers Ernie Broglio and Bobby Shantz, and spare outfielder Doug Clemens, to the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Lou Brock, and relief pitchers Paul Toth and Jack Spring. Despite six players being involved, the trade has since been known as “Brock-for-Broglio.”

Brock, of course, went on to hit .348 the rest of that season and lead the Cardinals to a World Series victory over the Yankees in seven games. He played on two more pennant winning teams in 1967 and 1968, and amassed 3.023 hits and a then-record 938 stolen bases by the time he retired in 1979. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1985.

Broglio Ernie 1966Broglio, who had won 18 games for St. Louis in 1963 and 21 games in 1960, had only seven more victories in a career that ended in 1966 at age 30.

I can hear my wife now.

“You can remember that, but when did our children take their first steps?”

“What is my favorite color?”

“When is our wedding anniversary?”

The last one is easy.

Take the date Brock collected his 3,000th hit — Aug. 13, 1979, in the fourth inning off the Cubs’ Dennis Lamp at old Busch Stadium —  and add two years. So anniversary No. 32 is less than two months away. See how easy that is?

Thirty-two, ironically, was Broglio’s uniform number with the Cardinals.

I’m already looking forward to our Larry Bird anniversary next year.
